DEER PARK, Napa County — Napa County public health officials issued a warning in May 2026 after three adults were hospitalized following consumption of wild mushrooms collected in the Deer Park area.

Where the incident occurred

The county’s May 12 public health announcement identifies the foraging area as between Deer Park Road, Fawn Road and Silverado Trail. The hospitalized adults were not Napa County residents. The official release did not identify the patients by name or establish their later outcomes, and this newspaper will not speculate about either.

Why familiar-looking mushrooms can be dangerous

Some poisonous species resemble edible mushrooms. Napa County’s health officer warned that even experienced foragers can make a dangerous mistake. Cooking, boiling, drying or freezing a poisonous mushroom does not reliably remove its toxins. Pets and children are also vulnerable to accidental exposure.

The county announcement described a broader California outbreak of serious mushroom poisonings, but those statewide numbers and the local hospitalizations are different statistics and should not be conflated.

What to do after a possible exposure

If someone may have eaten a poisonous wild mushroom, seek medical care immediately and call California Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms may be delayed for hours, so waiting to see whether someone becomes sick can be dangerous. For collapse, severe symptoms or another immediate emergency, call 911.

Residents should avoid eating unidentified wild mushrooms or accepting foraged mushrooms from unverified sources. The county’s alert is a continuing prevention message, not a report of a new poisoning on October 31.
